The Evening GED program is another successful year. According to the numbers given on Dec 4, 2017, the OLVCC GED program is still the most productive one in Aiken county. Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Since July 2017, we have had students that entered the program that received their GED, and students who have achieved their Workkeys certification. WorkKeys is required by many employers to indicate possible employee’s ability to meet certain job demands.
Once a month, a representative from Aiken Technical College and from Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act, WIOA, comes to talk to the students about furthering their education. They also help to decrease barriers to employment and help employers hire and retain skilled workers. We are thrilled that after leaving our program, many of our students have gone on to ATC and are working on degrees in various fields.
We are grateful for our teachers, Melanie Hutto, math/science and Rebekah Hannon, English and Social Studies; and our testing and orientation coordinators, Amber Banister and Juan Wiley. We are also grateful for Rick Fowler who volunteers as a math and science tutor.
Our program is very needed in the Horse Creek Valley area, and we do everything we can to keep the community informed and involved. We appreciate all the support we receive from the Center and other benefactors.
